EDUCATED
Many films are used for education as well as to entertain, many of these film are Documentary's, they allow us to see a view point that not our own.
A good example of a documentary that has done this is would be the Film The Cove were a group of scientist infiltrate a group of dolphins and learn about their behaviours.        
Information 
Many films are used so that the audience can learn about what's happening in the world , a good example of this type of film is Super Size Me, in which Marvin Spurlock eats McDonald's food for a month. It informs us about how fatty the food is in Fast Food chains.   

ENTERTAINED

All Films need to be entertaining but some genres like action do the entertaining much more productively than others. A good film that is entertaining is Expendable, its high obtain action and stunts means that its a very easy watch.      
SOCIAL
Most films thrive through the way that people will talk about them later, on if these films that gets people talking is the Horror Genre as people like to discus, the over the top death scenes as they allow people to feel wanted.       
ESCAPE
Many films are used to escape their daily struggle,  many of these film are action or fantasy films as, they allow us to image being in a different world.
A good example of a a film that does this is the Lord of the Rings as it could allow you to escape your.
