Typography

Typography for my Opening Scene

This is a good font as it looks like it has been attempted to be written three of four times as there are more layers. The effect this has is that it can be connoted that the writer was going throuhg so many thoughts while he wrote this, like he would during a murder or an interview.

This is a good font for a as it is grainy on the outside and ends of some of the letter, it creates the effect of having a problem with the mind as its like the person who wrote it hands were shaking during the composure of the font.

This is a good font for a as it is grainy on the outside and and is also written in the style of the Russian Army, it creates the effect of having a problem with the mind as its like the person who wrote it hands were shaking during the composure of the font.

Target Audience

The Two types of Audience

Social Group

Is about the Age, Gender, Nationality, Ethnicity and Socio demographic Group which is:
A-Top Earner
B-Professional
C1-Managerial

C2-Office Skilled
D-Manual Labour
E- Unemployed

Media Group

This is when the audience has a real media interest for example a preferred: Actor, Director, Film Genre or Book that has been adapted into a film. This allows them to feel as if they have a media identity.

Our Perfect Audience

Age: 25-30 year olds who have potentially just finished university and are starting a family and feel as if they need to be challenged mentally as a form of escape from the hard life of being a student and coping parenthood and work life. This links with the uses and gratification theory which suggests that people use the media for entertainment and escapism.

Socio Demographic: C1 B we have chosen this particular demographic due to the target audience being more likely to enter jobs that pay higher than someone who has not been to university.

White Male, European.

The target audience are going to enjoy the majority of media texts such as television and other movies that challenge him mentally to offer them a possible form of escape from their lives and life as a parent.

Opening Scene Idea

-Sherlock Opening Scene, we felt that this would be good inspiration as the sped up scenes of London would show that our film would be fast passed and exiting this mixed with a lone figure standing in the each shot would create enigma code the audience wouldn't know who he was.
-Morecambe and wise, we felt that this famous comedy sketch was good inspiration as then we could add bits of comedy to our breakfast, showing that the protagonist doesn't take himself seriously.
-Dexter Opening, we thought that this would be good inspiration for our film, as it would create a good example of a binary opposite as to have the comedy and then to use a match cut to show that he is a killer will help engage the audience.

Trafalgar Square-
I think that this would be a good choice for the setting of our Thriller Opening, as I really helps to set the scene and it will instantly tells the audience where the film is based. We felt to film this in London due to the fact that it is a recognisable city and has a deep history of  conspiracy and murder.

Piccadilly Circus-
I felt that this would be a good way to also show what will happen in our Opening due to the the fact that most thriller films have excitement throughout the film, and Piccadilly Circus is one of the busiest places in the country to the speed of the cars and the manic panic to get to where ever they going.

1)For the opening scene idea takes inspiration from some of these famous opening scenes and sequences. Our idea is to have shots of London that have been sped up apart from one man in the middle dressed in a suit. Then we will reveal the title and then fade into a house where we shoot through a window and see the character while he makes breakfast similar to the breakfast Sketch from Morecambe and wise, during the scene the character is listening to classical music, while he makes breakfast we want to use a match cut to cut to shots of just his hands about to murder people (an example is as he goes to butter he goes to cut some meat we use a match cut from his hand at the highest point coming don of someone but then cut back to the breakfast scene before we see the body)  until the door bell goes and he has to go to the door were he is given the dispatching.

2) Our second idea was once again a psychological thriller, it starts with a number of murders throughout a remote village in rural England during the time of the First World War, the job of investigating these murders is down to a young ex-military policeman. The opening would be a birds Eye view of the present day Somme which would then how some of the major credits, like Actors and Directors, it will then use a Match Cut to what would be 1915 Somme were the trenches are up and the war is in full flow. Then we continue the bird eye shot which continues over the battlefield seeing mass battles in a quick period this will then zoom into the body of one soldier who is dead and will reveal the title.

This idea wasn't as strong as the first idea and gave the impression of an action maybe even a horror film, in addition to this the opening sequence would too difficult to film due the setting of world war 2 being that we don't have the capability or resources to create this idea.

3) Our third idea for our opening sequence was a car park chase scene resulting in the death of the false protagonist. Although we could see this idea having a certain element of success however once again it would have been too difficult to film with all members of the group being unable to drive. As well as this the setting of a car park in which we could film in would be too difficult to acquire. As well as this i think the start of this film would give the impression of an action film and may divert potential audience members who would want to see a thriller film.

Audience Theory

Audience Theory

EDUCATED
Many films are used for education as well as to entertain, many of these film are Documentary's, they allow us to see a view point that not our own.
A good example of a documentary that has done this is would be the Film The Cove were a group of scientist infiltrate a group of dolphins and learn about their behaviours.
Information
Many films are used so that the audience can learn about what's happening in the world , a good example of this type of film is Super Size Me, in which Marvin Spurlock eats McDonald's food for a month. It informs us about how fatty the food is in Fast Food chains.
ENTERTAINED
All Films need to be entertaining but some genres like action do the entertaining much more productively than others. A good film that is entertaining is Expendable, its high obtain action and stunts means that its a very easy watch.
SOCIAL
Most films thrive through the way that people will talk about them later, on if these films that gets people talking is the Horror Genre as people like to discus, the over the top death scenes as they allow people to feel wanted.
ESCAPE
Many films are used to escape their daily struggle,  many of these film are action or fantasy films as, they allow us to image being in a different world.
A good example of a a film that does this is the Lord of the Rings as it could allow you to escape your.

How is the thriller genre represented through conventions?

How is the thriller genre represented through conventions?

The convention of thriller are seen throughout the clip from Batman Begins, some of these conventions are Dark, Minor Tone and Restricted. Firstly the clip does occasionally dip into the dark, this is a common thriller convention as darkness has many denotations such as danger, evil and even the feeling of being scared. The use of darkness is to show the amount of fright hat the young Bruce has of Bats and of the Dark. The use of Minor Tone in the clip is due to Hans Zimmers original score for the film, the Minor Tone denotes the feeling of danger and of fright similar to the ones of darkness however the tone is seen in both the scenes of young and older Bruce this confirms the theory that his past haunts him even after all those years. The whole clip is filmed in the an Restricted narrative this like many thrillers mean that the audience don't know whats going to happen next in the movie this is uses to great effect tin the clip as it leaves the audience questioning what going to happen for example when younger Bruce falls down the well we don't know in the three mins how he got out and how he has managed to get himself in prison.

Narrative Theories-Batman Begins

Propp Theory

Protagonist- Bruce Wayne as Kid and Adult, you know his is the protagonist as you see him in the first minute of the scene and it is focused on him.
Antagonist- The man that hits the plate out of Bruces Hand, you know that he is the Antagonist as he is very aggressive towards Bruce.
Helper- The old man, you know that he is the helper as he guides Bruce through the prison and tells him what going on.
Princess- Rachel, you know that she will be the princess as she is best friends with the Protagonist.

Tudorov Theory

The opening scene to Batman Begins follows partly the theory of Tudorov as it starts with the scene in a Equilibrium as both Bruce and Rachel are both acting like normal children in till Bruce falls down a well this is were the Disequilibrium begins , in the first 3 minuets of the film we don't see the an attempted repair of this. The same format is seen in the second seen were Bruce is in the prison Equilibrium is shown at the start of the scene as nothing has gone wrong yet, then the Disequilibrium begins when the big man hits the plate out of Bruce's hand.

Barthes' Theory

There are two examples of the action device that Barthes speaks about, first is the part were Bruce Wayne falls down the well this means that an action has taken place that means something else needs to happen. The second action device was when the man knocks the plate out of his hand this triggers a large fight scene in the prison.
There are many connotation that you can make from the scene, for example the use of a chid Bruce at the start in =stead of the adult Bruce this means that we can connote that Bruce is venerable as even an Adult and his past comes back to haunt him often, from this you denote that a possible villain is going to come and get him that he already knows or that a possibly happen again.

How does the opening sequence affect the audience? -Inception

How does the opening sequence affect the audience?
Christopher Nolans box office hit Inception is a film that truly boggles the mind and engages the audience, through the Narrative structure, Sound, Editing, Camera Work and Mise en Scene. The most important part of any film is the opening as it tells the audience the characters involved and even gives you hints at what the plot will entail.

The narrative structure of the Opening of Inception is a Non-Linear as the scenes are not showed to us in time order. the effect this has on the audience is that it makes them question why the structure is like this. This makes the audience stand up and listen to what is and what will be going to happen. We as the audience get a restricted view of what's going on in the clip, as the Non-linear narrative leaves the audience with questions which wont get answered until the end of the clip. the effect this has is that the audience will be engaged as they will want to see their questions answered. Therefore Nolan used a Non-linear and Restrictive narrative structure to help engage the audience.

Christopher Nolan at the time of this film (2010) was one of the hottest properties on the market after his success with his Batman franchise. The Nolan way of editing is plain to see within the opening scene. Nolan uses a a Long Take to open up the movie of the sea waves crashing against the beach, this is a good example of enigma code as just showing us the sea shows the audience little and makes them restricted from the plot as its just Sea. This helps engage the audience as the clip is shown for a good 13 seconds and will know what's going on so will continue to watch on to try and piece it together. Nolan also uses a Cross- Cut from Leonardo Dicaprio's character lying on the beach for a reason that is not explained that continues the enigma of the audience as they don’t know why he's there, he cuts from this to and equally confusing scene of two children running around and laughing together. It is quite obvious that these two scenes are not happening at the same time but on the same beach. The effect this has on the audience is that it makes the audience even more confused as they will still have no idea of what's going on so they will continue to watch the film to try to piece it back together. This is an example of Non-Linear storytelling as they the narrative jumps from one scene to another at differing times.

Hans Zimmer is one of the most famous and experienced Composes in the world and once again Zimmer has been successful in creating a score that illustrates not only the characters but the Genre to. The SoundTrack fits the bill for a Thriller as it creates Tension through the use of a major chord as the heavy bass and the strings are strung out to create vast amounts of tension. The effect on the audience of the Non-Diegetic is that it puts them on the edge of their seat and will continue to watch the film. The Diegetic sound (Dialogue and Sound Effects) had the effect of helping the audience understand the narrative and plot much better.
The Dialogue of the children in the other cut scene is that it will attract the attention of the audience as a childs laughter. The dialogue of the old man showed that he was in control as he spoke with the knowledge and understanding  that you would only get from living through a life well lived. Leonardo Dicaprio's character Dominic Cobb’s first bit of dialogue gives the audience the idea of the plot as he mentions Dreams and you can tell unlike in the first scene where he is not in control, in this one you can tell he is as he speaks with  convention which shows that he is very experience. The effect this has on the audience is that it will make them believe in the characters more as they speak with sense and it its mostly easy to understand.

To create a true character and scene that can be believed Nolan applied Mise-en-scene convention. The first part of Mise-en-scene that must be used is Lighting Nolan used he sues this to show the emotion of Happiness. The First Happiness is seen when Dominic Cobb (Leonardo Dicaprio) washes up on the beach. The effect this has is that it is ironic as the Cobb is not in any way, shape or form happy in where he is he is infact quite upset. The effect this has on the audience is that it creates a slight bit of joy in seeing him suffer as it can take us from our stressful lives, however it mainly creates Enigma Code as no-one knows why he is there or what will happen to him.
The next part of Mise-en-scene that needs to be shown is the Props used the old man in the scene uses a spinning top, the top plays a significant role in the plot. The effect his has is it also creates enigma code as the audience don't know why its there or what it really is. The next step of Mise-en-scene is the setting, the scene has two setting one on a beach and one in a house/palace. The effect of the beach is again similar to one of lighting of a happiness as everyone is normally happy on a beach as it is fun and exciting. The effect of the house is that it gives background to old man as it makes it seem as if he is a rich man and what Dominic Cobb is doing here. Therefore Nolan uses a variety of Mise-en-Scene to engage the audience.

Nolan also uses many Camera Movements such as the Long Shots which is used in the start of the clip when Cobb is taken into the Palace. It is used so that you can make assumption of who the character is that lives in the house. This makes the audience feel anticipation as they  want to know who lives in the house and if he/she is or whether he/she is a villain or a hero and this will mean that they will be on the edge of their seats. The Director also uses a Close Up of Cobb after he is dragged into sit down this is so you can see how tiered Bobb is. The effect of this on the audience is that you can see that he is in an intense moment in the clip and the audience will feel that he is in danger and want to see what happens next. Therefore Nolan uses a variety of camera movements to engage the audience.

In Conclusion, Christopher Nolans box office hit Inception is a film that truly boggles the mind and engages the audience, through the Narrative structure, Sound, Editing, Camera Work and Mise en Scene.
